Getting Started With Pilates:  What If You’re Capable of More Than You Think?

Starting something new can be intimidating, especially when you’re not sure your body can do it.

At Performance Pilates, we often meet people who are interested in Pilates but aren’t quite sure it’s for them. They may worry that they’re not flexible enough, strong enough or coordinated enough. Maybe they’re dealing with scoliosis, back pain, an old injury or simply don’t feel confident learning new movements.

But here’s something we’ve learned after years of teaching Pilates:

We’re often capable of much more than we think.

We love watching someone discover that their body is capable of something they didn’t think they could do.

Sometimes it’s a new exercise. Sometimes it’s moving without the discomfort they expected. Sometimes it’s finding strength or mobility they didn’t realize they had.

And sometimes the change is even bigger.  It’s the moment someone begins to see themselves differently.

We often meet people who come to us already convinced of their limitations:

“I’m not flexible.”
“I’m not coordinated.”
“I have a bad back.”
“I have trouble following directions.”
“I could never do Pilates.”

But those statements don’t necessarily tell us what someone can or can’t do. They tell us what that person has come to believe about themselves.

At Performance Pilates, we’re much more interested in discovering what’s possible.

Maybe something has always been difficult. Maybe an injury changed the way you move. Maybe your body moves differently from someone else’s. Or maybe you’ve simply spent years telling yourself, “I’m not good at this.”

Pilates gives us an opportunity to challenge those assumptions…not by ignoring your limitations, but by understanding your body, building on what you can do, and progressing from there.

Pilates Is More Than Exercise

Beginner Pilates Reformer Class. “Footwork”.

At Performance Pilates in Sugar Land, we don’t expect you to walk through the door already knowing how to do Pilates. That’s why you’re here.

Pilates is more than learning a series of exercises. It’s a practice.
We teach the exercises and the concepts behind them, with the goal of helping you understand how to perform each movement correctly. But nobody gets everything right the first time.

Through repetition, consistency and greater awareness, the movements begin to make more sense. What initially requires a lot of thought becomes more familiar. Your understanding deepens, your movement becomes more precise, and your body changes.

There is purpose behind the exercises and the order in which they are taught. Each movement builds on what came before, gradually developing the strength, mobility, coordination and awareness needed for what comes next.

But Pilates isn’t only about progressing to harder exercises. Sometimes progress means returning to a fundamental exercise and discovering something you didn’t understand the first… or the hundredth time you did it. That new awareness may be exactly what you need to perform a more challenging movement with greater ease and understanding.

Awareness…

Pilates asks us to turn our attention inward, to notice how we breathe, where we hold tension, how we organize movement and where we may be working harder than necessary.
Instead of focusing only on what the body is doing wrong, we can be proud of what we do well and become curious about what else we can do.
We practice. We learn. We refine. We discover how your body moves, and what it’s capable of doing.
And sometimes the biggest accomplishment is simply trusting yourself enough to try.

Your Body Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect to Do Pilates

None of us moves perfectly. Our goal isn’t to create a “perfect” body. It’s to help you become stronger, more adaptable and more confident in the body you already have.

Through personalized Pilates and our fascial approach to movement, we explore your individual movement patterns and help you find greater strength, mobility, ease and confidence.

One of the most rewarding parts of teaching Pilates is watching someone discover that something they thought they couldn’t do is actually possible.

Maybe Pilates Is for You

If you’ve ever thought:

“I could never do Pilates because…”

We’d encourage you to reconsider what comes after the word because.

You don’t need to get in shape before starting Pilates.

You don’t need to become more flexible first.

You don’t need to already know the exercises.

You don’t need to be coordinated.

And you certainly don’t have to be perfect.

You just have to be willing to begin.

At Performance Pilates in Sugar Land, Texas, we meet you where you are. Through thoughtful progression, personalized instruction and an understanding of how your body moves, we help you discover where you can go from there.

Because sometimes the most important thing we strengthen isn’t just the body.  It’s the belief in what we’re capable of.
