Cancer Diagnosis, Recovery, and the Power of Movement After 40: Cody’s Story in Sugar Land, TX

How Pilates and Fascial Counterstrain Support Surgery Preparation and Recovery for Women Over 40 in Sugar Land

For many women over 40 in Sugar Land, staying active feels like part of who they are…until something unexpected changes everything.

As the owner of Performance Pilates in Sugar Land, I never imagined I would be navigating a cancer diagnosis, surgery, and recovery while feeling completely healthy. I had no symptoms. No warning signs. I was teaching Pilates, staying active, and living life normally.

Then I heard the words: cervical cancer.

Because May is Women’s Health Month, I wanted to share my story in hopes that it encourages other women to prioritize their screenings, trust their instincts, and if necessary, understand how movement can support the body before and after surgery.

Why Screenings Matter, Even When You Feel Fine

Like many self-employed women, I stayed on top of my annual exams, but I often delayed them because life and work came first.

What I now know is this:

A cancer diagnosis can happen to anyone! Even healthy, active women with no symptoms.

An abnormal well-woman exam led to a biopsy, which revealed the earliest migration of cancer cells. Early detection made all the difference in my outcome. If there’s one thing I hope women take away from this story, it’s this: Do not put off your screenings!

Recovery After Surgery Is About More Than Rest

Following my diagnosis, I underwent a hysterectomy and additional cancer treatment. Although the surgery was minimally invasive, recovery still required patience. My doctor advised me to avoid core engagement while healing, which meant dramatically slowing down my normal activity level. For a while, walking was my only exercise. I quickly noticed what inactivity was doing to my body. I was experiencing

  • Tightness
  • Stiffness
  • Reduced mobility
  • Numbness in my leg

It reminded me how essential movement is for circulation, tissue hydration, and overall healing.

How Pilates Helped Me Recover

Once I was cleared for gentle movement, I slowly returned to Pilates using very foundational exercises on the Reformer:

  • Footwork
  • Frog
  • Leg circles
  • Pelvic lift/Bridging
  • Gentle mobility work

Nothing aggressive. Nothing forced. These small, controlled movements with spring assistance, helped me to restore mobility and feel more “connected” again.

Fascia Focused Pilates

At Performance Pilates in Sugar Land, we use a fascial-focused approach to movement. Rather than isolating a few muscles, we focus on how the entire body distributes movement through connected tissue systems.

Post-surgery Pilates recovery movement

In my recovery from surgery, everything I’d learned and practiced with fascial movement proved to be true! My Doctor had advised against engaging core muscles during exercise. The truth is, following surgery, engaging core muscles was not happening. It would have been very painful!

Engaging muscles ourselves changes the bone structural relationships of the body, that give us distribution, or tensegrity. After surgery, my body only wanted to be in it’s natural, Bio-Tensegrity structure, which requires letting go of the abdominal and gluteal muscles. (The result was no pain or disturbance of the surgical area).

All of your muscles naturally activate when we need them…but not if they are already engaged by us.

For many adults over 40, this becomes increasingly important before and after surgery, during recovery, and while otherwise managing stiffness or pain.

Preparing the Body Before Surgery

Looking back, I believe one of the reasons I recovered as well as I did was because my body was already conditioned through consistent Pilates work and Fascial Counterstrain sessions.

Before surgery, I worked on:

  • Strength and stretch through Pilates
  • Improving fascial hydration and resilience
  • Supporting circulation
  • Reducing inflamation with Fascial Counterstrain

Incorporating Fascial Counterstrain sessions before and after surgery to support the lymphatic system, reduced inflammation, and promoted faster healing.

Recovery is never just about what happens after a procedure. You can take steps to prepare for any surgery, and speed up the healing process.
